Day 1
Introduction to Outdoor First Aid
- Understanding first aid in remote environments vs. urban settings.
- Legal responsibilities of a first aider.
- Effective communication with emergency services and use of the 999/112 system.
Primary Survey and Scene Assessment
- Assessing dangers in outdoor environments.
- The DRABC protocol (Danger, Response, Airway, Breathing, Circulation).
Basic Life Support (BLS)
- CPR for adults and children.
- Use of AEDs in outdoor scenarios.
- Recovery position and airway management.
Managing Unresponsive Casualties
- Recognising and treating unconscious but breathing casualties.
- Dealing with choking incidents.
Minor Injuries and Common Wounds
- Cleaning and dressing cuts, grazes, and blisters.
- Managing embedded objects.
- Identifying and treating minor burns and scalds.
Shock and Major Bleeding
- Recognising the signs and symptoms of shock.
- Treating severe bleeding with bandages and improvised materials.
Scenario Practice
- Real-life scenarios outdoors to apply skills learned.
Day 2
Environmental First Aid
- Recognising and treating hypothermia, heat exhaustion, and heatstroke.
- Managing dehydration and overexertion.
- Prevention and treatment of frostbite and sunburn.
Injuries Specific to Outdoor Activities
- Sprains, strains, and fractures: identification, immobilisation, and splinting.
- Head injuries: concussion vs. serious brain injury.
- Spinal injuries: safe management in remote locations.
Medical Emergencies in Remote Settings
- Recognising and managing asthma attacks, anaphylaxis, seizures, and diabetic emergencies.
- Recognising and treating heart attacks and strokes.
Bites, Stings, and Poisoning
- Treating insect bites, tick removal, and prevention of Lyme disease.
- First aid for snake bites, wasp/bee stings, and plant-related irritations.
Improvised Techniques
- Creating splints and slings using available materials.
- Building stretchers for casualty evacuation.
- Navigating limited resources in wilderness settings.
Incident Management and Group Safety
- Planning for emergencies in outdoor environments.
- Group dynamics and maintaining morale during crisis.
- Prioritising casualties when resources are limited.
Final Assessment and Feedback
- Practical assessments based on realistic outdoor scenarios.
- Individual feedback and tips for improving skills.
Certification
Upon successful completion of this course you will be issued with a certificate which is valid for three years.

- Safe scene management to protect both the casualty and the responder.
Basic Life Support (BLS)
- Administering Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) to adults.
- Using an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) effectively.
- Managing unresponsive casualties who are breathing (recovery position).

- Recognising and treating shock.

- Handling severe bleeding, including the application of bandages and dressings.
Minor Injuries and Illnesses
- Treating minor wounds, cuts, and burns.

Record Keeping and Aftercare
- Documenting incidents accurately in the workplace accident book.
- Post-incident support and ensuring casualty welfare.
