How to identify the Lion's Mane Jellyfish

Ecological Significance - Lion's mane jellyfish play a vital ecological role in Scottish waters. As they drift along, they provide a source of nourishment for various marine organisms. Many species of fish, such as herring and mackerel, feast upon these jellyfish.

Be aware! While encountering lion's mane jellyfish can be a captivating experience, it's important to approach them with caution. Their long and venomous tentacles contain stinging cells that can cause discomfort, skin irritation, and allergic reactions in some individuals.

If you or someone you're with gets stung rinse the affected area with seawater (not fresh water), remove any spines from the skin using tweezers or the edge of a bank card, soak the area in warm water for at least 30 minutes (use flannels or towels if you cannot soak it).  Seek medical advice.  Och Aye Canoe runs first aid courses that can give you more advice and tips.
