What does "Och Aye the Noo" Actually Mean?
I get asked about the name Och Aye Canoe from time to time, particularly where it came from, so I thought it was worth explaining!
Most people have probably heard the phrase “Och aye the noo” at some point. It’s one of those sayings that has become associated with Scotland, although you probably won’t actually hear many Scottish people walking around saying the whole phrase!
The individual words are definitely Scottish though. “Och” is a bit like saying “oh” or “well”, “aye” means “yes”, and “the noo” means “just now” or “at the moment”.
So, put together, “Och aye the noo” roughly means “Oh yes, just now.”
Over the years the phrase has become a bit of a stereotypical Scottish saying, particularly through comedy and people putting on exaggerated Scottish accents.
And that’s where Och Aye Canoe comes in.
So, why Och Aye Canoe?
It’s basically a play on words.
Say “Och Aye Canoe” out loud and it sounds very similar to “Och aye the noo”.
When I was looking for a name, I wanted something that was obviously Scottish, easy to remember and had a bit of humour about it. I also didn't want something that sounded too corporate or serious. I have also now trademarked the name of my business!
Considering I spend my time getting people out paddling, Och Aye Canoe seemed to fit pretty well!
I think the name also suits what we're about. Getting outdoors and going paddling should be fun. You don't need to turn up already knowing everything or having loads of experience. Part of the enjoyment is getting out there, learning something new and seeing Scotland from the water.
Whether that's a peaceful paddle, exploring somewhere new or just having a laugh along the way, that's what Och Aye Canoe is all about
