5 Things People Get Wrong About Paddleboarding
Share
If you’ve ever watched someone gliding across the water on a paddleboard and thought:
“That looks amazing… but I’d probably fall straight in.”
You are definitely not alone.
At Och Aye Canoe we hear the same worries all the time — and honestly, most of them turn out not to be true at all.
So here are 5 of the biggest myths people believe about paddleboarding… and why they might be stopping you from trying something you’d absolutely love.
1. “You Need Great Balance”
Nope.
Most beginners are surprised by how stable modern paddleboards actually are. We use Red Equipment Ride paddleboards, designed for learning by being nice and stable.
You also don’t need to stand up immediately.
Many people begin:
- kneeling
- sitting
- wobbling slightly while laughing
- claiming “this is impossible” before standing up 10 minutes later
And falling in? Honestly… it’s part of the fun sometimes.
2. “You Have to Be Super Fit”
Absolutely not.
Paddleboarding can be:
- gentle and relaxing
- a workout
- peaceful floating
- adventurous exploring
- or mostly chatting while drifting around a loch
We regularly have complete beginners join sessions who:
- haven’t exercised in years
- are nervous about fitness
- are recovering confidence
- simply want to try something different outdoors
You go at your pace.
3. “Scottish Water Is Always Freezing”
Okay… sometimes it’s refreshingly character-building.
But during most sessions you’ll be wearing suitable equipment, and on calmer summer days Scotland can honestly be one of the most beautiful places in the world to paddle.
Mirror-flat lochs.
Wildlife.
Sunsets.
Castles.
The occasional confused duck.
Not bad really.
4. “You Need Expensive Equipment”
Definitely not when you’re starting.
At Och Aye Canoe we provide:
- paddleboard
- paddle
- buoyancy aid
- safety equipment
- instruction
So you can simply turn up and give it a go before spending money on your own kit.
5. “Everyone Else Will Be Better Than Me”
This is probably the biggest myth of all.
Most people arriving at a beginner session are thinking:
“I hope I don’t make a fool of myself.”
Within half an hour everyone is:
- encouraging each other
- laughing
- celebrating tiny victories
- and feeling far more confident than they expected
Paddleboarding isn’t about looking impressive.
It’s about getting outdoors, trying something new, and enjoying being on the water.
